About Hothfield Heathlands
The Hothfield Heathlands Nature Reserve is an extensive area of heathland, woodland and river edge habitats. The site is jointly owned by Ashford Borough Council and Kent Wildlife Trust and is managed by the Trust. Hothfield Heathlands are an ancient fragment of our landscape which date back to prehistoric times. They have been shaped and fashioned by many thousands of years of human stewardship and are home to a fantastically rich and varied wildlife.

Hothfield Heathlands is a beautiful nature reserve near Ashford and one of Kent's most important wildlife sites. Managed by Kent Wildlife Trust, it is home to rare heathland, woodland and valley bog habitats, as well as an impressive variety of plants and wildlife.
- Where is Hothfield Heathlands located?
The reserve is located in the village of Hothfield, just a few miles north-west of Ashford, Kent. The main entrance and car park can be found off the A20 near Hothfield Common.
- Is there an entrance fee?
No. Hothfield Heathlands is free to visit and open throughout the year.
- What wildlife can I see?
Visitors may spot a variety of birds, butterflies, dragonflies and wildflowers. The reserve is known for species such as heath-spotted orchids, bog asphodel, round-leaved sundew, tree pipits and keeled skimmer dragonflies.
- Are there walking trails?
Yes. Hothfield Heathlands offers four waymarked walking routes, allowing visitors to explore different parts of the reserve and enjoy its varied landscapes.
- Is the reserve suitable for families?
Absolutely. Families can enjoy short walks, wildlife spotting, seasonal colours and open natural spaces. The reserve provides a great opportunity for children to connect with nature.
- Is Hothfield Heathlands accessible?
Yes. The reserve features the Triangle Trail, a 500-metre all-season accessible route with a smooth surface and gentle gradients, designed to be accessible for a wide range of visitors.
- Can I bring my dog?
Yes, dogs are welcome. To help protect wildlife, particularly ground-nesting birds, dogs must be kept on leads in open habitats from March to September and should always be kept under control. Visitors should follow all on-site signage.
- Is there parking available?
Yes. A large free car park is available for visitors, although there is a height restriction barrier of 2 metres.
- Are there toilets or visitor facilities?
There are information boards and walking routes, but visitors should note that there are currently no toilet facilities on the reserve.
