Biddenden Vineyards is Kent’s oldest commercial vineyard having been established by the Barnes family in 1969.
Original plantings of 1/3 acre have now grown to 24 acres, producing award winning White, Red, Rosé and Sparkling English Wines. Julian Barnes and his eldest son Tom look after all of the vineyard management and winemaking at Biddenden. The knowledge which the family has built up through experience over the years can be seen in the quality and consistency of the wines produced year on year. From the first Biddenden wine, which was bottled around 1972-3, production has now grown to about 80,000 bottles per year. All vine work on the estate is still carried out by hand, including pruning, canopy management and picking, with harvest running from mid to late September right through to November.
The famous Biddenden Cider is also produced at the vineyard; a strong, still cider produced from a blend of Kentish culinary and desert apples, along with Biddenden Farm Pressed Apple & Pear juices.
A delicious new addition to Biddenden juice selection has bounced in to the Biddenden family with the brand new Love Red® Apple Juice. Being an entirely British apple juice, exclusively produced in Kent by Biddenden Vineyards and AG Thames, Red Love is famous for its unique blend of health benefits and 100% natural ingredients. Find out more about Red Love here.
The vineyard is open to visitors throughout the year and admission and tastings are free of charge. On Saturdays all year round and Wednesdays June to September the vineyard offers Charity Tours at £1 per person. These tours are for individuals, families and small groups of friends, giving visitors the chance to learn more about the history of the vineyard and more. All proceeds raised will be donated to Dandelion Time, a Kent based charity helping children who have been through traumatic life experiences.
Visitors are able to just pop in and stroll around the vineyard’s self-guided tour route or for a more personal experience can book on to a private guided tour which includes tastings.
Biddenden Vineyards is one of the Seven Wonders of the Weald. An annual Seven Wonders pass allows one free entry for an adult and child to enjoy each of the seven attractions. Find out more at www.sevenwonders.org.uk
